Why do houses have garages?

In today’s modern world, garages may seem like a redundant construction right? They take up valuable space that could be used for another room that’s more useful, like an extra bedroom, bathroom office or living area. That’s not necessarily the case. The garage remains extremely important to society, just look at house prices with garages to those without! Having a garage is so much more than a valuable addition to a home, it’s a luxury! You have the freedom to store your vehicle away from anyone, locking it up safe and sound. If you love your vehicle, you’re going to struggle to find a better solution than a garage. Of course, the garage today can be more versatile. Many people convert garages into gyms, offices, playrooms or bars, so there are still plenty of options available to you. That said, you do need to choose the right door. One that can be opened and closed easily enough, of course. But also one that provides good insulation to keep the cold out during the winter.

In the UK, residential garage doors have changed considerably over the past couple of decades. We’ve seen a big shift from up and over doors to roller and sectional garage doors, whilst they now genuinely add to a property’s style and character, beautifying your home.

What are the main types of garage doors?

First up are up and over garage doors. These are the best known, with good reason. They’re very secure, sturdy and ideal for protecting your car or any other items in storage. You can open them using an electric motor or by hand. The only negative is their weight may cause problems if you live on a second floor flat

Sliding sectional garage doors are also very popular. They have a much lighter construction, so installation is usually much easier too – great if you don’t have easy access to the back of your house or garage. As their name suggests, they work by sliding horizontally to open, rather than lifting up like traditional garage doors

You might also come across roller door options these. They’re really stylish and widespread across the UK. They are also very cost-effective and may be the best option if you’re looking to replace your garage door on a budget. Roller doors open upwards like regular ones but are much lighter, making them easier to use

First and foremost, houses have garages because they protect a person’s vehicle(s) from theft and vandalism. In the UK right now, vehicle theft is on the rise, so it makes perfect sense to invest in a home with a garage. In fact, you will now discover many new build sites in the UK which have garages beside the houses or in blocks, so there are no signs of them losing significance any time soon! Other reasons why people buy homes with garages include:

  • Less wear and tear on the car as it isn’t exposed to UK weather conditions. This means the paintwork is far more likely to stay in top condition for longer, which makes it perfect if you’re wanting to sell the vehicle in years to come.
  • Makes moving house easier. It’s so much cheaper than paying for a removal van or hiring your own lorry and means there is less of a risk of damage occurring during transit!
  • Helps avoid traffic problems and road rage incidents as someone doesn’t have their prized possession sat outside on view all day long.
  • Another advantage (although not major) that comes from having a garage attached to your home is that you will never lose your keys again. This is because they are still attached to your house, even if you leave them inside on a hook or in a drawer.
  • You have a place to work on your vehicle whatever the weather. From changing oil to tyres and welding, you can tackle projects and save money on your vehicle, rather than always running it to a garage for routine tasks.
